SALE FREUX – LA MELANCOLIE DES PENNES (Selbstmord Kommando Produktionen)

Clocking in at 44 minutes approximately and taking up one side of a pro-tape, ‘La Mélancolie des Pennes’ is the monumental sophomore album from French sensation Sale Freux, one of the Black Metal underground’s best-kept secrets. If ever there was a valid reason to start buying cassettes again, then this has to be it. The prime expressive outlet of a sole entity known to his friends as Dunkel, Sale Freux is a vibrant concern that has yet to put a foot wrong during the course of its stellar, fledgling career.

If debut album ‘Subterraneus’ came as a breath of fresh air, then this follow-up rubberstamps SF’s status as genuine contenders to a murky throne of chaos. Deploying a rich and varied approach to traditional BM, with the use of an ambitious array of instruments, ‘La Mélancolie des Pennes’ is top notch from the opening strains of quaint instrumental ‘Èclat d’Ailes’ right through to the closing volleys of ‘L’Envol Grave’.

Everything in between is equally exceptional. The six songs proper are lengthy and involving, averaging seven minutes’ duration and including frequent excursions and mood changes. Complementing the music, the packaging is great: nice minimal artwork that suits perfectly and the inlay includes all lyrics – a nice bonus considering the measly price of admission. My grasp of the French tongue is far from adequate but I think it would be safe to say that the subject matter is dark, sick, deviant and corrupt. The parts I can grasp are disturbingly insane.

The guitars are fuzzy, lo-fi and relatively melodic (acoustic at times, which would normally cause me to suffer a stroke, but Sale Freux pulls it off with style), most of the rawness emanating from the shrill shrieks that pierce the night sky, ripping the listener’s soul like some harbinger of death, a rapier to the eardrums, a knife through the speakers, dripping of despondency and despair. This is depressive Black Metal that will dispel all your preconceptions of what depressive Black Metal is … because it doesn’t sound like a typical band that might fit in such a category.

The production does leave a lot to be desired at times, but that authentic, underground cassette sound / feel is part of the overall charm and, if anything, adds to the already considerable appeal… Minor quibbles are that the album is shorter than the debut and I would also prefer if the music was divided evenly over two sides rather than just one; otherwise, the whole package is superb.

Musically, it’s less forced or contrived, more organic, honest and genuine than most of the music being churned out in the current climate, where bands are content just to copy one another and go through the motions. Of course, that’s not to say that Sale Freux doesn’t sound similar in many ways to a thousand other BM bands – it is Black Metal after all and stays safely within confines that need to be applied more rigorously – but there’s a subtle, unique twist applied in the most natural of ways by Dunkel and somehow he manages to sound a million times better than nearly all his peers.

No mean feat, that. Quite a prestige, in fact.

Im Dezember diesen Jahres wird es endlich veröffentlicht werden. Die Sprache ist hier natürlich von oben genanntem Album "La Mélancolie des Pennes" der französischen Ein-Mann-Band Sale Freux. Mastermind Dunkel präsentiert dem geneigten Hörer hier das zweite Werk seiner Band, und kann das hohe Niveau, welches er sich mit dem Debüt gesetzt hat, locker halten. Das Werk bietet sogar einige Überraschungen.

So fällt zunächst der Stilwechsel auf... war das Debüt noch durchzogen von einem nicht zu leugnenden Gefühl der Naturverbundenheit, verhält es sich hier doch anders. Sicher - Akustik-Gitarren finden auch hier Verwendung, und das mehr als einmal, aber die Grundatmosphäre ist eine völlig andere. "La Mélancolie des Pennes" scheint tiefer zu gehen. Es ist, wie der Name schon verrät gefühlvoller, leidenschaftlicher, persönlicher. Man lauscht den Klängen, und hat den Eindruck einer sterbenden Seele in ihrem Todeskampf zu zuhören. Übrigens bedeutet der Bandname ins Deutsche übersetzt nicht viel mehr als etwa 'Dreckige Krähe'. Ein besserer Name in Verbindung mit der dargebotenen Musik hätte man wirklich nicht wählen können. Die Musik an sich scheint direkt aus den frühen 90ern Jahren der französischen Black Metal Szene entsprungen zu sein - und doch klingt sie erfreulich unverbraucht. So stellt der hier zelebrierte Black Metal wirklich die Essenz all dessen dar, was ich unter dieser Musik verstehe - Aggressivät, Räudigkeit, Krankheit, Melancholie, Schmerz, Kälte und Hass. Auch wurden in einigen Liedern schwere Streichinstrumente verwendet, die allerdings bewusst dezent im Hintergrund gehalten wurden, und so nur diese drückende, nebelverhangene, düstere Atmosphäre noch mehr unterstreichen. Besonders zum Tragen kommt das in den Songs "Insomnia" und "Averse de Plumes".

Fazit:
Im Vergleich zum ersten Album "Subterranus" ist das neue, hoffentlich baldig kommende, Werk von Sale Freux düsterer und melancholischer ausgefallen. Ein depressiver Black Metal-Klangteppich, mit einer wunderbaren Atmosphäre, die man allerdings erst wirklich auf sich wirken lassen muss. So hat mich das Album schon zwei, drei Durchläufe gekostet, um auf mich seine ganze Essenz zu entfalten - so zeigen sich einem doch erst nach mehr als einmaligem Hören verschiedene Details, wie die erwähnten verwendeten Streicher. Doch die Mühe hat sich definitiv gelohnt. Ein mehr als überzeugendes Machwerk, und wenn das Debüt in meinen Augen schon gut war, dann ist das hier einfach nur grandios! HUMUS – ART NOIR CLANDESTIN (Selbstmord Kommando Produktionen)

Sale Freux mainman Dunkel (vocals, bass, guitar) joins forces with drummer Èclat Cadavéreux to form Humus, a band similar to the aforementioned Sale Freux but with a slightly more mystical, rustic, forest-y bent, if you get my drift. This debut full-length comprises three long tracks, stretched out over some 32 minutes in total, and was unleashed by SKP on cassette format four months ago.

I listened to ‘Art Noir Clandestin’ a few times upon purchase but never had time to scribble a review. I only remembered it today when I received an email from the label informing me of their four new releases (including a mandatory new SF album, which will be something else indeed if even half as good as the unsurprisingly sold-out ‘Subterraneus’). Anyway, I lobbed the Humus debut into my cassette player again this evening and was blown away all over again…

I like the primitive sound and I love the crisp, natural underground vibe seeping out through my speakers. Even though the music is suitably raw and rough, there’s still an atmospheric element at play which renders the whole thing both palatable and disturbing. There’s not much to say about this wholly creditable, wonderfully organic UGBM release apart from the fact that it’s fascinating, genuine and available from the label for a mere pittance.

I think you should check this out and grab a copy of the new Sale Freux full-length while at it cos this Dunkel guy is producing some seriously impressive shit these days.

Schon vom ersten Ton an fällt es einem schwer, sich zu halten, man wird erbarmungslos mitgerissen von diesem Sog aus schwärzester Galle und Atmosphärik.
Deha, alleiniges Mitglied der Formation Imber Luminis (Regen des Lichtes), hat mit 'Fletus' ein derart ehrliches, herzerwärmend und zermürbend zugleich, Klangkonstrukt erschaffen, das dem Hörer alle Sinne abverlangt und ihn fortzerrt in die Tiefen der Trauer und Melancholie, der Selbstfindung, der Selbsthinterfragung; der Gedanken.

Mit unheimlichem Bedacht beginnt Deha, des Hörers alle Augen auf sein Schaffen zu richten und sich ihm ganz hinzugeben. Sanft erklingen erste, langsame und ausklingende Laute einer unverzerrten Gitarre, führen einen fort durch atmosphärisch-dichte Gebilde, die von beruhigenden, dem Ambient angelehnten, Tönen untermalen werden. Parallelen zu Svarts 'Förlorad' und Hypothermias 'Gråtoner' oder 'Skogens Hjärta' werden manifest, ohne dass man auch nur den Eindruck bekäme, dass es sich um eine inferiore Nachahmung dieser Meisterwerke handlen könnte. 'Fletus' selbst beweist den Geist, als ein Meisterwerk geboren zu sein, über knapp 40 Minuten hin wird eine wunderschöne und verträumt-verzweifelte Atmosphäre erschaffen, die sich kontinuierlich schleppend aufbaut und immer wieder von diesen niemals aufdringlich wirkenden Tönen getragen wird.

'Fletus', zu deutsch "Wehklagen/Das Weinen", wird noch als eine, von einem Ambient-Projekt namens Alenda, überarbeitete Version präsentiert. Diese Version sagt das aus, was die erste in Schlüsseln ausdrückte; es handelt sich nur um einen Traum, der niemals Wirklichkeit werden wird. Es ist die Trauer als Einsicht. Das Erwachen tritt spätestens nach diesen 39 Minuten und 12 Sekunden ein..

Diese Musik vermag, zu fesseln, das Selbst und die eigene Essenz in Stücke zu reissen und sie wieder richtig zusammenzufügen.
Denn die Wahrheit erklingt selten und diese ist 100 Seelen vorbehalten. Monotones, herrlich-prächtiges Grundrauschen inklusive.

AH CILIZ – REAWAKENING ANCIENT SORROW

Ah Ciliz piqued my attention for two reasons: a) it involves W. from the rather excellent Grimlair as a session musician on the first two tracks and b) it emerges on one of the most exciting underground Black Metal labels operating anywhere in the universe right now – Selbstmord Kommando Produktionen. From the get-go, this album – which comes in a DVD case and is limited to just one hundred very affordable units – had the potential to be something quite special; I’m glad to say ‘Reawakening Ancient Sorrow’ hasn’t disappointed.

After ambient four-minute opener ‘1533, The Fall of Tawantinsuyo’ disperses, ‘Oceans From My Veins’ pours through the speakers, awash with pain and melancholy, eight minutes of depressive, deeply anguished BM, executed in the lo-fi minimal style of early Hypothermia, flooding the senses, crushing the spirit with its sombre, morose intent, suffocating the listener in a blanket of inconsolable despair. The electrics are turned way down and what we are left with is almost acoustic, but not quite. The vocals are piercing, haunting, coruscating. Doom and gloom all the way, my friends.

‘Comatose’ is beautiful, atmospheric yet crushing, reminding me of a more subdued Drowning The Light perhaps, while ‘Fragil Serviente’ is as delicate, submissive and vulnerable as the title suggests, coming across like a Black Metal version of Cult of Luna. Fans of everything from Woods Of Desolation to Sigur Ros should find something here to enjoy. The dynamic in play right across the hour’s duration of this album (including two bonus tracks) is a joy to behold, the timing is perfect, the mood capturing a perfect balance between utter dejection and supreme rapture – two emotions that are of course parallel, separated by the thin lines of sanity and nothing else.

The fifth track, ‘Creators Of Time (Mayan Resurrection)’ could possibly be the highlight of a stellar collection, fluctuating between highs and lows, covering many moods, working on the subconscious mind in a manner that most music can’t come close to. But there’s no let-up: ‘Ancient Mayan Sorcery’ is both hypnotic and aggressive, surprisingly violent in light of its passive opening, exploding like a torrent of rage, demonstrating that this hitherto unheralded American is a gifted individual blessing the underground with his presence.

Suffice to say, ‘Reawakening Ancient Sorrow’ is all killer, no filler (even though the bonus tracks are rougher and rawer than their predecessors, lending them a more spectral aura). There are many peaks to be experienced on this CD, but no troughs. If you want some depressive, ambient Black Metal that is more likely to blow your socks off than turn you gay, then this is one you need to hear.

INTROVERSION – MUDE (Selbstmord Kommando Produktionen)

‘Müde’ contains three lengthy depressive Black Metal lamentations (averaging around ten minutes) and a calming, melodic three-minute closer, ‘Lacrimae Desperationis’. I know a lot of people don’t care much for depressive BM (and I can appreciate why) but I have a soft spot for it and I really like this cassette. All in all, it’s pretty standard fare – on a par with what you’d get from a Self Mutilation Services release, for example – but very well composed, arranged and delivered. The production is excellent, too, so the tape has a professional CD sound to it (assuming you own a decent stereo). The label has loaded the music onto a nice red tape and wrapped it all up in a tasty lay-out, so no complaints in the quality control department.

The first song ‘Nirgends’ sets the tone and it’s clear straight away where exactly we’re going. Bands like All Of The Cold, Happy Days and Deep-pression spring immediately to mind, with perhaps a hint of Hypothermia and Trist. The singer sounds like he has decided to cut his throat with that shiny new razor blade, rather than his wrist, and the sense of suffering and anguish being emitted from the music is too stark to be fake. Of course, this subgenre of the subgenre always risks venturing into surreal, OTT terrain but generally Introversion manages to maintain an acceptably sincere and convincing face.

‘Zerbrechende Rosen’ is slower than its predecessor, more laboured, more tormented, coming across like a really sick version of early Anathema – sad, sorrowful and without hope but also raw and relevant. The wonderful ‘Impuls??’ boasts some nice piano parts that call to mind Shining, still with touches of early Anathema ran through a depressive blender. By the time the album / demo is finished, you should feel pacified (and satisfied that your money has been well spent).

In a nutshell, ‘Müde’ is an entertaining excursion into typical depressive Black Metal territory. It’s not offering anything particularly new, but the compositional skills and musicianship are top notch, making for an enjoyable release (in so far as this bleak style of music can ever be termed enjoyable). The songs – mostly mid- to slower-paced, melodic and atmospheric Black Metal – manage to sound calming and disturbing at the same time and there’s every reason to suspect that Introversion can build on this sonic delight and develop on future releases. I suppose at the end of the day, you either like depressive BM or you don’t. If you do appreciate it, then this is one of the most solid demos I’ve heard recently. If not, have a nice day.

Sale Freux “Subterraneus”

Do you remember this legend about Dead, the Mayhem vocalist, saying he used to inhale the remnants of a dead raven he was keeping in a plastic bag before taking the stage?
Well, listening to Sale Freux’s “Subterraneus” is basically the musical equivalent of breathing a putrid raven corpse buried in some unholy ground for weeks.
I can’t honestly think of a better description…

Like any other musical genres struck by mainstream recognition, black-metal has drifted far, far away from its original essence and I’m always grateful to bands who keep the flame of the old days alive. As long as they do it with style.
And like any of these bands (there are actually not so many but all are mentioned in this blog), Sale Freux has invented nothing (who has anyway?) and owes a lot to “Transylvanian Hunger” or any other norwegian cornerstones of the early 90’s, but Sale Freux has digested enough the teachings of the elders to regurgitate them with its own pestilential breath. Yes, pestilential it is: this album reeks of death, madness and a strange morbid beauty.

Black-metal is all about the atmosphere, all about the grimness.
It is about black & white out of focus pictures not glossy photoshopped sessions with shiny 20 inches spikes purchased on e-bay. It is about capturing the invisible, the unseen, not writing overproduced songs with bombastic arrangements on pro-tools and fucking triggered drums. It is about a music reaching the inner depths of your soul, not a collection of catchy hooks for drunk teenagers in the mosh-pit. And fuck all those metalhead crowds and fuck Watain too.

BM is clandestine, vile, stinky and fucking raw. Sturm Und Drang.
Sale Freux (Bloody Rook in french) embraces all of the above.

The band plays a cavernous (in the sense that it sounds like it was recorded in a cave, could be a swamp too) music echoing the rural french folklore from long forgotten days. But these echoes are more conceptual than musical, so no stupid pagan metal crap here, again it’s all about the atmosphere. If you have ever wandered in some old forest somewhere in the rural parts of France, Sale Freux music will be even more appealing to you as the band captures perfectly this melancholic, mysterious and haunting mood you can feel in these places as long as you have a little imagination and propension to tragedy (Dionysus).
“Subterraneus” is a menacing black-metal storm with ravenous melodies, the epic odyssey of a lost soul screaming along with the witches, the ravens and the sick, cursing mankind, celebrating the wicked. There’s some desperate romanticism to it, almost like a pale baudelairean sun glowing throughout the record.
All lyrics are in french which fits perfectly to the music, I can’t really tell more about this but there’s a certain poetry to it with the use of old-fashioned french, something a little similar to Darvulia syntax, although the music and the concept is radically different. Production is top-notch, slightly better than on their previous demo but not too polished, with some interesting acoustic overdubs and other nature sounds in the tradition of grim forest black-metal which kinda reminded me of the first Arckanum without these ridiculous pipes.
All in all, “Subterreanus” embodies prefectly my vision of black-metal.

The band is born from the ashes of Saatkrähe, although its genitor, Dunkel is already quite a figure in the underground black metal scene since he’s also behind the bands Drakonhail (which I totally worship), Voqkrre & Breizh Occult. Subterraneus is their first full length and the tape is available now on +Selbstmord Kommando Produktionen+.
Very limited copies. This is a masterpiece. Don’t fucking miss it.

‘Subterraneus’ is one of the most impressive underground Black Metal albums I’ve heard in years. I’ve been hard-pressed for cash recently – you may have read how Ireland has been society-raped by errant bankers, greedy property developers and corrupt politicians? – so I decided to start buying some cassettes. As you do. The benefits of purchasing albums on tape are twofold: they are cheaper; and it opens up more windows of opportunity in terms of discovering what lies in the true depth of the underground. That’s where I found Sale Freux and ‘Subterraneus’ – an album so genuinely steeped in underground magnificence that it makes me almost glad to be broke. Everything about this cassette is fantastic.

Sale Freux is a one-man entity, from France, the lone creator being Dunkel, who eschews all things modern in favour of a lo-fi, fuzzy sound that seems to have been recorded in some dark nocturnal woodlands with ravens flying overhead (and joining in every now and again). The songs vary in length from two-minute opener ‘Rampant Dans Les Marais Amers…’ to the epic twelve-minute final track ‘Rats Des Champs (Rural Black Metal)’, with a noticeable predilection for longer tunes as the album progresses. (There are only three songs on Side B and they clock in at over 30 minutes between them.)

However, regardless of whether he’s spewing out a standard-length track or weaving a more-epic one, Dunkel is a master of pace and atmosphere, composing and executing all his work magnificently. We are served an abundance of acoustic and ambient interludes, which bolster the overall package, complementing the fiercer passages perfectly. The production is no more than adequate, which adds greatly to the appeal; this most certainly is not Dimmu Borgir or Satyricon! I could easily imagine ‘Subterraneus’ being recorded in Norway in 1992 and, to be honest, it’s probably as good as anything that was. I’m not sure if there’s a CD version of this in the pipeline, but it’s so good it seems unlikely to disappear into obscurity. Then again, stranger things have happened in this upside-down world.

In short, this is one of the best ‘new’ Black Metal albums you’re likely to clap your ears upon these days. It’s not easy to put my finger on exactly why it’s so great … I think it’s largely due to the authentic manner in which the album as a whole personifies the true essence of UGBM. From start to finish, it’s an exhilarating, breath-taking ride. It’s got that same raw and endearing vibe as early Leviathan, Striborg, Ildjarn, Burzum or Sacrificia Mortuorum but doesn’t sound quite like any of these. In most regards, ‘Subterraneus’ exists in a league of its own.

There are only 100 copies of this. I strongly recommend you to hunt it down.
